Improving Your Golf Game:

A Guide for Newcomers

Essential Tips and Strategies for Beginners

Introduction

Golf is a sport that combines skill, patience, and strategy, offering both a physical challenge and a chance to enjoy the outdoors.
It can be competitive or social, played on your own or in the company of others, the choice is yours.  For newcomers, sometimes stepping onto the course initially can be both exhilarating and daunting, however, with the right approach and mindset, and a little time anyone can make steady progress and enjoy the journey of improving their golf game.

On Joining Nairn Dunbar Golf Club…

New members to the club are offered several free introductory small group lessons, usually in an evening time slot at our practice area or on the putting green.  These lessons are offered by our teaching professionals and cover the basics of learning golf – such as how to swing the golf club and get the ball in the air, and towards the target, how to hit the shorter shots, such as chips which you need around the green, and advice on how to putt, a skill which of course you need on the green.  Towards the end of these introductory lessons, some time will be spent on the golf course helping you to feel comfortable to continue your golfing development independently in that environment.

Should you wish to further develop your golfing skills you can arrange additional lessons directly with the golf professional to help you improve.

1. Get the Basics Right – Have a Lesson

When starting golf, it’s crucial to master the basic fundamentals.

This includes understanding the grip, stance, and posture. The way you hold the club, position your feet, and align your body all contribute to a solid foundation. Many beginners benefit from watching instructional videos (do recommend not overdoing this, or indeed watching too much variety) or, better yet, getting a lesson from our qualified golf professionals at Nairn Dunbar who can identify and correct any initial mistakes and get you on the right track to success.

Working on the basics will give you a great opportunity to improve quickly.

2. Choose the Right Equipment

Golf clubs come in various shapes and sizes, and using the right set can make a significant difference. Beginners should avoid splurging on expensive gear and instead opt for a starter set designed for new players. Ask for advice at the Nairn Dunbar pro shop, where the friendly professionals will give you the right advice in choosing new equipment, especially important if you are completely new to the game or if you prefer you could speak to experienced golfers you know, as they can suggest clubs suited to your height, strength, and swing speed.  Although we would always recommend speaking to one of our professionals before making any purchases, they will often be able to let you try equipment before you commit to buying it.

3. Practise Regularly and Purposefully

Consistent practice is the key to improvement. Instead of hitting balls aimlessly at the driving range, set very specific goals for each session, or simply play on the course and practice by just playing to learn.  For instance, you can focus on one aspect of your game at a time, such as improving your drive, mastering short irons, or improving your putting technique. Keep a practice diary to track what you’ve worked on and monitor your progress over time.  Obviously how much you can practice will depend on other commitments you have, but a little bit of quality practice will help you improve.

4. Learn Golfs Unwritten Rules – See them here

Understanding the unwritten rules of golf will make your experience on the course more enjoyable.  This includes keeping pace with play, repairing divots, raking bunkers, and being mindful of noise when others are taking their shots. Good etiquette not only shows your respect for the course but also for your fellow golfers.

As for the written rules, don’t worry about them too much, you don’t really need them until your playing competitions, initially just have fun and simply learn golf.

5. Work on Your Short Game

Many beginners focus on driving the ball far down the fairway, but much of your score is determined by your performance around the green. Spend time practising bunker shots, chipping, pitching, and putting, as these skills often make the difference between a good round and a great one. Use our putting green and short-game practice area to develop these vital techniques.

6. Develop a Pre-Shot Routine

Having a consistent simple routine before each shot helps you focus and reduces nerves. This can include visualising the shot, checking your alignment, and taking a few practice swings.  Ask our club professional for advice on what make a good pre-shot routine. A steady routine builds confidence and prepares you mentally for the challenges of each round.

7. Play With Others

Golf is as much a social sport as it is an individual challenge. Playing with friends and being part of Nairn Dunbar Golf Club will introduces you to different playing styles and offer opportunities to learn from more experienced golfers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek advice—most seasoned players are always happy to share tips and encouragement.

8. Stay Positive and Be Patient

Improving at golf takes time. You’ll always encounter good days and bad but maintaining a positive attitude and being patient with your pace of progress is vital.

Celebrate your small achievements and remember that every golfer was once a beginner.

Conclusion

Golf offers lifelong enjoyment and endless opportunities for learning. By focusing on the basics, practising with purpose, and embracing the spirit of the game, newcomers can quickly see improvement and discover why golf is cherished by millions. So, grab your clubs, hit the course, and enjoy the rewarding journey ahead.
